Things to do in Panama City: Smithsonian Center at Punta Culebra

Look at these views! 


An escape within the city that is perfect for babies, kids, parents and well, anyone! The Smithsonian’s Punta Culebra Nature Center is located on the Amador Causeway. 


After being greeted by beautiful views, you will see a special exhibition on frogs (that you may - depending on crowds - have to collect a ticket for (included in price)). These tickets are handed out just in front of the frog exhibit). The exhibit is like a real life Where’s Waldo. These tiny, beautiful creatures can be difficult to spot!


Next on the line-up is an open tank with two sea turtles! Talk with the volunteer on site to learn more about these peaceful creatures.


There are normally several huge iguanas hanging out around the turtle exhibit as well. Keep your eyes peeled! Don’t get too close though - you wouldn’t want any collision with their tails! 


Continue wandering forwards to visit the small aquarium and don’t miss the opportunity to step outside the back door of the aquarium to see beautiful rock formations and a line of ships waiting to enter the canal. 


Then ramble out to your right toward the open air starfish and sea cucumber tank. Right before you enter this area you’ll see several trees to your right. Look up to see if there are any sloths hanging around! We have seen several in these trees.


After washing your hands, you can touch the starfish and sea cucumbers in one of the tanks. Quite exciting!


Once you leave this area you can wander along several small trails for a mini hiking experience. There are several nice places to picnic at the center. We like to spend a bit of time just hanging out, enjoying the ocean breeze and watching the huge ships enter the canal. 



All in all, a lovely break from urban chaos! 


Insider Tip: You can drive through the checkpoint and park just before the activities center. You can use your stroller, but if your baby is comfortable in a carrier all the better as there are a few (very short!) trails just after the touch tanks.
